mgb Recognized Again

Posted by Nicole on June 19th, 2010

Last Sunday night our brilliant architects, mgb Architecture + Design, were in Chicago to pick up their two IIDA Interior Design Competition Awards. One for our little boutique, and one for the Rennie Art Gallery and Offices.

Little did they know that they’d also end up winning the Best in Competition award for LYNNsteven!

We’re thrilled and honoured that the IIDA chose our boutique for the 37th Annual award, ahead of projects such as the Guess? Inc. Headquarters in Los Angeles, MUMUTH Music Theatre in Graz, Austria and the Dubai Mall Medical Centre in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  We’re honestly blown away!  And of course we owe it all to the team at mgb, and everyone at Kingdom Builders.

LYNNsteven Wins an IIDA Award!

Posted by Nicole on March 12th, 2010

Our wonderful architects Mcfarlane Green + Biggar (MGB) picked up two of the six awards handed out at the 37th Annual Interior Design Competion held by the International Interior Design Association.

MGB won for both LYNNsteven and the Rennie Gallery + Offices at Wing Sang, which is just up Carrall Street at 51 East Pender.

Winning for two projects out of the 300 from around the world that were nominated speaks to MGB’s vision, professionalism and skill.  Congratulations MGB!

We’re Open!

Posted by Nicole on December 24th, 2009

Like a Christmas present two days early, we finally opened our doors on December 23rd.  Just in time to kick things off with a Holiday Sale!

The team from Kingdom Builders worked day and night to get us open in time for Christmas.  The space really started to come together about two weeks ago, and while there’s still a little work to be done to finish off the store, we’re going to wait until early January to tie up the loose ends.  We think the space is amazing, and we can’t thank Kingdom or the design team from MGB enough for their hard work.

So check out the pictures, or better yet stop in and say Hi and have a look at the store in person.  Most of the store is 20–40% off, with an extra 10% off over the Boxing Day weekend (December 26th and 27th).  Hope to see you soon!

Been a little quiet around here lately

The Paper Is Up! Next step, demolition!

In case you haven’t noticed, it’s been quiet here on Shoptalk for the past few weeks.  It’s because I’ve been guest-blogging over at Scout Magazine.  Every week I’m posting a recap of what’s been happening and how the process has been going.

Not much new to report, but be sure to check out my last post for Scout Magazine where I talk about our recent buying trip to L.A.

The permits are ready, the paper is up and construction starts this week!  We’re one step close to opening our doors.

Going With the Flow

Posted by Nicole on October 4th, 2009

I thought that once the lease was signed, Lynn Steven would be open in no time.  Not so much!  Daily I am asked when the boutique is going to open; if I had it my way it would have been a month ago.  I am starting to learn through this process of starting my own business that

  1. things never go quite as planned, and
  2. patience is a virtue

I am embracing the concept of going with the flow, and that sometimes what I thought I wanted may just not work.  There are bound to be a million roadblocks and obstacles in the way but there is always a way around them.

Our New Space

Posted by Nicole on September 12th, 2009

After what seems like an eternity of looking for the perfect space to set up shop, I am thrilled to call 225 Carrall Street Lynn Steven’s new home. After nine months of looking, this space came to me through a series of events that all unfolded within a couple of days. It is amazing the people you meet who want to help you out. I owe a huge thanks to two people; I hope you know who you are. They both believe in my business and that means a lot.

Many people may remember this space as the Hunt & Gather boutique at the corner of Carrall and Blood Alley, however 225 Carrall has a rich, sometimes sordid history dating back much longer than that. Built in 1887, The Bodega Hotel was home to the Bodega Saloon, Vancouver’s first “gentlemen’s club” and later where Joe Fortes once worked as a bartender. When you walk past the space, take a look inside and you can still see the original flooring, including the hotel’s name spelled out in the mosaic tile, which we plan to keep of course!

We have just begun designing the space. I am working with an amazing team headed by Michael Green of McFarlane Green Biggar Architects, based in North Vancouver. They just recently won Architects of the Year at the Western Living Design Awards. They are an incredibly talented group, and I’m confident the store will be something the likes of which you have never seen in Vancouver.

Make sure to keep checking in as I will be posting pictures as we go through the process of transforming 225 Carrall Street into Lynn Steven.

Opening Lynn Steven, Part I — Introductions

Posted by Nicole on September 8th, 2009

Well, I have finally done it!  I have been talking about doing it for awhile and the time has finally come.  I’m opening my own store!  And I’m going to tell you all about it.

I’m going to use the Lynn Steven Shoptalk blog to talk about my experiences of trying to start my own retail store.  For anyone who has ever opened their own store, they will know the trials and tribulations I have experienced as I go through this process.  For anyone wanting to start their own store, I hope that I can provide you some insight.
