Well, I have finally done it! I have been talking about doing it for awhile and the time has finally come. I’m opening my own store! And I’m going to tell you all about it.
I’m going to use the Lynn Steven Shoptalk blog to talk about my experiences of trying to start my own retail store. For anyone who has ever opened their own store, they will know the trials and tribulations I have experienced as I go through this process. For anyone wanting to start their own store, I hope that I can provide you some insight.
Some background on me: my name is Nicole. I have lived in Vancouver all my life, most recently living in Yaletown for the past five years. I live with my husband of two years (we have been together for 12). I have worked at what feels like every retail store in Vancouver.
I started my retail career back when I was 16 when I got a seasonal job at Club Monaco. That turned into an Assistant Manager position, and for the most part I’ve been working in retail ever since. Most recently I managed the Lacoste flagship store here in Vancouver. I started my career with Lacoste at Holt Renfrew which at the time was a leased corner in the Women’s Contemporary Department. I worked there for 2.5 years before being asked to run the Lacoste store on Burrard Street. Having worked for Lacoste for almost 4 years I was getting antsy and wanted to see if something else was out there for me.
I took the leap and tried working for a financial advisor for about seven months — a complete departure from the retail world. I quickly discovered that I was not an office person at all. I missed meeting interesting people throughout the day and of course I missed the fashion. Rather than hitting monster.com, my husband and I realized that if I was ever going to open my own store it was now or never! I enrolled in the Venture Program at BCIT last fall, and the rest is history. Since finishing the program I have been working on making my dream a reality.
Keep visiting and I’ll keep you posted on everything I have to go through to open Lynn Steven Boutique.
